In Paul’s letter to Philemon, he says, ”Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the saints.” (Verse 7) And again in verse 20, ”I do wish, brother, that I may have some benefit from you in the Lord; refresh my heart in Christ.”
The word “refresh” stands out to me especially as I wrestle to make it a regular rhythm in life. True refreshment and rejuvenation requires a more active engagement than passivity. It's not merely vegging-out in front of a screen or another form of escapism. Furthermore, Philemon calls to attention the invaluable role the community of believers play in refreshing one another. We need one another to encourage, build up, care for, and deeply restore.
